We all know the Three Simple Rules that we
attribute to John Wesley, the founder of Methodism: Do no harm, Do good,
Stay in love with God. Wesley was fond of coming up with simple rules that
people could easily remember and try to follow. For finances, he said: Earn
all you can, Save all you can, Give all you can.
Jack Hite brought the following into
the office:
A
Variation on Wesley’s Rule
Do all the good you can
For all the people you can
By all the legal means you can
In all the ethical ways you can
In all the places you can
At all the times you can
As long as ever you can.
There are no limits to the good we
can do. We tend to apply limits to our work for any number of reasons. There
is only so much time. What about looking out for #1? And, there are always
people we do not want to help under any circumstances.
But, John Wesley understands what
Jesus is teaching us. We are not supposed to be preserving our own
limitations. We are, with God’s help, supposed to be exceeding them. And, we
are not supposed to be judging who is worthy of our help and who isn’t. That
may be the hardest of all rules to obey. Let’s pray for God’s help in giving
up our position as judges.
And, my thanks to Jack for bringing
this variation on Wesley’s rule to my attention.
Peace and
Prayers,
Walt
