A Message from Our Pastor

Walt Message Accessibility to facilities has been a concern of mine for a while. I thought I understood the needs of disabled people a long time ago. But, it turned out that I really didn’t. It wasn’t until Betty started suffering her disability that I began to understand how hard it is for some people to navigate situations that most of us don’t even notice. As most of you know, I sent out an email a while back asking for your support in evaluating how friendly our church buildings are to people in wheelchairs or walkers. I got about 5 or 6 responses from people who were interested. So, we’re going to meet soon to get a consensus regarding how to examine our church’s strength and weaknesses in being an open facility, one that is welcoming to all people. I’d hate for our church to be: Jamieson Memorial UMC: Church for the Able-Bodied. I don’t know where this may lead. And I’m running into that a lot lately. I didn’t know where the Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations would lead when we started. But, we formed eight new initiatives designed to make us a better congregation to our members and to our community. This is exciting as we look at needs and try to find ways to meet them. We’ve been meeting needs in Clarksville all along with our support of Project Care-For, the food pantry and clothes closet, Madilyn’s House and our transient ministry, among others. But, now, we have the energy and drive to go beyond our normal ministries and find new ways to meet even greater needs. Jesus is pleased with our determination to be a better and more vital congregation. My thanks to all of you who have taken on the Five Practices and its initiatives. My thanks to those of you who are ready to evaluate our church buildings, looking for ways to become more accessible and welcoming. This year is shaping up to be one that transforms us into a more compassionate and self-giving outpost of the Kingdom of God. Blessings to all of you.

Peace and Prayers,
Walt

UMCOR Appeal for Health Kits
Health Kit

The Jamieson United Methodist Women are collecting health kits which are needed immediately in Haiti. Please bring your kits by next Sunday, January 24 and leave them in the box in the back of the sanctuary to be shipped to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) distribution center on the 25th.
“For people who are feeling powerless in being able to help those in Haiti, providing health kits is a tangible way they can make an immediate difference,” said Kathy Kraiza, director of UMCOR’s relief supplies.
She estimates that hundreds of thousands of kits will be needed in the days and months ahead. They will be distributed to those who have been forced to leave their homes as a result of the recent disaster. The following NEW items should be placed in a sealed one-gallon plastic bag. These items can be purchased at Dollar General in Clarksville.
· 1 hand towel (15” x 25” up to 17” x 27”
. No kitchen towels.
· 1 washcloth
· 1 comb (large and sturdy, not pocket-sized)
· 1 nail file or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers)
· 1 bath-size bar of soap (3 oz. and up)
· 1 toothbrush (single brushes only in original wrapper, no child-size brushes)
· 6 adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages
· $1.00 to purchase toothpaste (NOTE: Toothpaste is purchased in bulk to be added to health kits to ensure that the product does not expire before they are sent.)
Because the emergency kits are carefully planned to make them usable in the greatest number of situations and strict rules govern product entry into international countries, UMCOR requires that the kits contain only the requested items – nothing more.

Join us every Sunday at 10:00 am for Sunday School!
Nursery is available for young children

A nursery is available downstairs from the sanctuary for infants and toddlers during both the 9:00 am and 11:00 am services and Sunday School, staffed by our Nursery Teacher, Jan Turner and an adult or youth volunteer. During the 11:00 service, children are invited to come to the front of the church for a Young at Heart lesson and then adjourn for a special Children's Church session downstairs.

Our September Sunday School Kick-off launched a full program of intentional faith development for all ages. In addition to classes for children and youth, the Adult Class has begun a new study, "Servant or Sucker", based on a video series by Rev. Beth Templeton. We're encouraged by the large attendance each week as we work together to address poverty in our community. With our six talented instructors rotating leadership, the classes have challenged us and stimulated animated conversations. All are welcome.
