A little girl was busily drawing a picture. When her mother asked what she was drawing, the girl replied, “I’m drawing a picture of God.”

“But, honey, no one knows what God looks like,” said the mother.

“Well, they will when I get through!”

November 2008

Retired United Methodist Bishop Rueben P. Job has written a little book entitled Three Simple Rules. When I say little, I mean it’s about the size of a post card and has only 75 pages. But, it is sharp and profound. It’s the kind of book that could change your life.

So, I’m sure you’re wondering by now, What are the three simple rules? They are:

                                      Do no harm.

                                      Do good.

                                      Stay in love with God.

You’ll agree that these rules are, indeed, simple. But, if we think about them a little, we’ll begin to understand that they are not easy.

Let’s consider just the first rule. Is it easy to go through one’s life without doing any harm? Do we not often harm ourselves through bad habits and various forms of neglect of our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being? Do we hurt other people by things we say or do? What sort of harm are we doing to this glorious creation God has given to us to watch over?

It seems as though we might be doing plenty of harm in plenty of ways if we are not conscious of our words and actions. Doing no harm requires that we make decisions with that goal in mind. We need to be intentional with our words and our actions. This might involve curtailing our driving a little, or taking reusable grocery bags to the store, or being less critical of someone, or taking a close look at our own lifestyle choices.

And that’s just the first simple rule, the one that at first glance, probably looked as if it would be the easiest. Bishop Job’s book is a very powerful tool for amending the way we live to more closely reflect what God’s will would be for us.

I’m planning on leading a study of this book early in 2009. It takes just five weeks to go through this little book in some depth. I would like you to consider how important it might be for you to participate in that study. Maybe it would be related to a New Year’s resolution. Just give it some prayerful consideration, especially if your life is not exactly how you think it should be.

Peace and Prayers,

Walt

fun_4688c8_print.tiffRoy Wine:  GED Success Story

Passing the GED test paved the way for Roy Wine’s enrollment in college.  A home-schooled student, Roy’s mother, Cheryl, passed away before he finished his education.  He took the GED test as a tribute to her.  Since he passed the test on the first try, he decided to attend SVCC college level classes to continue his educational career.  He plans to transfer to a four-year institution and possibly become a school teach.  Congratulations Roy!

Minutes of the September 11, 2008 meeting were approved.

Joe Senz opened with a poem by Helen Steiner Rice.

FINANCE COMMITTEE:  (Jennifer Phillips)    The bank balance statement and the monthly budget report were distributed.  Jennifer moved $5000 into the Building Maintenance and Repair savings account for the fellowship hall and hallway repairs.  Mission Giving is over budget due to special offerings.  Apportionments are 83% paid.  Lori Hamlett will serve as the backup Treasurer for Marvin Jennings.

Terry reviewed the 2009 budget. He reported that $4000 had been removed from the budget submitted by the Trustees. The Building Maintenance and Repairs savings account has a balance of $4000. Any additional money needed above what has been budgeted will be moved from this account.  Funds for the U2 missionary are included in the Education budget.  Jennifer made a motion to accept the budget as presented with budget total of $157,000.  Joe Senz seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

Terry reported on pledges.  To date, fewer pledges have been received than last year; the pledged amount is approximately $157,000.

There was general discussion about replacement of sanctuary roof and parsonage renovations

SPIRITUAL LIFE:  No report.

MISSION COMMITTEE:  (Fran Green)   Nothing to report.

Project CareFor needs a director if it is to continue next year.  Debbie suggested that we publicize the need for leadership and additional volunteers to the church and community.

REACH AND RELATE:  (Lori Hamlett)

A fellowship dinner will be held in November but not in December.

Elaine Senz reported on the Shepherd program.  Eight of the shepherds met with Walt and will continue to meet quarterly.

WORSHIP:  (Lori Hamlett) Nothing to report.

EDUCATION:  (Michelle Gibson)

Walt led Safe Sanctuaries training. Advanced training will be held at Crenshaw UMC in Blackstone on Nov 15th.  Nov. 20th is the next Education meeting.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES:  (Mike Cowley)

Fellowship Hall Kitchen Renovation.  The project is complete except for installing the exhaust fan.  The remaining funds have been designated for renovation of the hallway and fellowship hall. Hope to complete this fall

JMUMC Sanctuary Roof.  The Trustees are still in the process of obtaining roof quotes and specifications for the replacement of the Sanctuary roof.  We currently have one quote for $71,000.00.  Additional quotes and specifications will be obtained.  Roof leaks and loose shingles will be watched closely until the finances can be resolved.

Church Doors.  Water/weather has caused the exterior finish to peel on the lower panels.  Clint Dalton contacted Howerton’s Reproductions to determine if the church front doors could be repaired under warranty.  Howerton’s stated the condition is normal wear.  Greg Carkhuff has volunteered to assist Larry Connolly will repair if needed.

Play Ground.  Our playground is in serious need of clean-up.  Mike Cowley will bring the subject up to the administration board once again to determine what action the church wants to take.

Sewer smells.  The sewer smell near the upstairs bathroom was noticed lately.  The Trustees have investigated this in the past and believe it caused by the close proximity of the plumbing vent and the exhaust fan for the bathroom.  The fix maybe to raise the height of the plumbing vent.

Broken Towel Rack.  It was reported that the towel rack was broken in the upstairs bath.  We inspected tonight and found nothing, rack is secure.

Michelle made a motion that the playground equipment be removed and disposed of properly.  Joe Senz seconded the motion.  Motion carried.  Lori offered to help to have the playground equipment removed.  She will call Shirley Williams in Boydton to see if she is interested in any of the equipment.

Mike offered to program the church thermostats for any meeting that is held at the same time and place every week.  The Cub Scouts have moved to the Trustees room because of an increase in their attendance.  Fran offered for the Trustees to share the Project CareFor room.

YOUTH:  (Michelle Gibson)

The Youth have resumed meeting. There is no set schedule, but planned meetings are published on the church website.  Trunk or Treat will be held on Friday 31st in the church parking lot.

Fran Green attended the meeting concerning the U2 missionary.  St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church is interested and made a $300 commitment.  Three more parties are needed to contribute $300/month.  Debbie Connolly will lead the effort for the application process.

UNITED METHODIST MEN:  (Steve Roberts)

The UMM breakfast will be held on Sunday, Oct.12th.

MEMORIAL COMMITTEE:  (Sandra Bagbey)   No report.

STAFF PARISH RELATIONS:  (Leigh Felton)

The committee met in September. Incoming committee members for 2009 will meet with the current committee in December.  The SPR is making an attempt to make the congregation aware of the members who comprise the committee so that church members may pass along suggestions or comments.

LAY LEADER:  (Mary Linda Davis)  No report.

Respectfully submitted,

Barbara Cowley

cans1c.tiff         Jamieson is planning to help sponsor a food drive for the needy in our community.  Food collected will go to the Food Pantry where we have been bringing Food on Communion Sundays.  During the months of November and December, we have decided to bring “a can a Sunday.”  If everyone chooses to do this, we would have over 100 cans to take weekly to help our less fortunate.  If you had rather bring your food on Communion Sunday, that is great, too.  “We Care…We Share” is something we hope you will feel is a good idea, and will be willing to help.  Please place your food in the rear of the Sanctuary.  It will be removed weekly.

friends_5017c2_print  Advanced Training for Safe Sanctuaries program will be held at Crenshaw United Methodist Church in Blackstone on 11/15/08 from 10 am-4 pm. Lunch is provided.  The cost is $25/person.  Contact the church office to sign up. 374-8050
