It all began with a matching gift of $6,000.
In early 2007 the JMUMC United Methodist Men voted to remodel the
Fellowship Hall kitchen. The project would require new electrical wiring,
lighting, plumbing, cabinets, countertops, appliances, flooring, paint,
and decorations. Simply put, raising more than $16,000 and completing the
project within a year would require a miracle. However, never daunted by
the seemingly impossible, the UMM and JMUMC membership raised more than
$17,000 in less than a year and kicked off the project in January 2008
with the goal of serving the monthly membership dinner from the new
kitchen on the second Tuesday of February.

In addition to monetary contributions,
members participated in the demolition of the old kitchen, patching of
walls, painting, wood-working, cleaning, and other general labor tasks to
support numerous contractors from the local area. Miracles occurred daily
as every contractor arrived when scheduled and completed their work on
time. The JMUMC kitchen project was completed on Friday February 8, ahead
of schedule and below budget. The membership enjoyed a superb meal
and entertainment in the Fellowship Hall on February 12.
The success of this
project was primarily due to the professionalism and significant
contributions made by Leigh Felton, Boston Lumber; Charlie Simmons,
Simmons Construction, and M.J. Colgate, Colgate & Company. The remaining
funds from the kitchen project will be used to renovate
the Fellowship entry hallway and the Fellowship Hall.
